At the Peninsula Stadium on Good Friday, Oliver Sanderson’s brace startled the Ammies and ensured Sutton left with all three points.
Karl Robinson, the manager of Salford City, was extremely disappointed with his team’s performance and called the loss a “disgrace.”
He said: “It’s a credit to the opposition, I thought they outfought us, I thought they won more second balls, I thought they made it more difficult for us than we made it for them at our home ground. It’s a disgrace.”
Salford came into this match on a three-game unbeaten run and were well beaten by a side fighting for their League Two survival.
Examining why Salford were outmatched on the day, Robinson said: “I got the team wrong, so I have to take responsibility for that.
“But what I won’t take responsibility for; is the lack of work ethic, it’s inexcusable. I think I’ll have to plead the fifth for large parts of what I really want to say.”
Robinson was very evidently upset with his players, as his side struggled to get out of second gear for large parts of the game. Sutton were not much better than the hosts, which would have frustrated the Salford manager even further.
“I got one or two things wrong, I put a bit too much faith into certain people who maybe I shouldn’t have. We’ll be in very early tomorrow morning.
He then highlighted how the Ammies appear to struggle against the weaker teams in the division, despite being at their best against the stronger sides.
He added: “We’ve drawn to Forest Green here; we’ve drawn to Doncaster here and we’ve lost to Sutton United.”
“Who have we beat here? Barrow, Wrexham, pushed Stockport all the way, Morecambe, we go away to Notts County and perform the way we did.”
Robinson will be hoping for a much better display in Salford’s next fixture away to Walsall on Easter Monday.
