Before the event, Steve Clarke will need to make some decisions due to injury concerns that are causing havoc.
When Steve Clarke selects his Scotland team for Euro 2024, he probably perspires.
From the goalie to the striker, the team is full with talented players with lots of options all around the pitch. For some reason, our best players—especially in recent years—have always been full-backs.
But with our two best right-sided defenders potentially joining Lewis Ferguson on the list of players missing the competition in Germany this summer, Clarke will undoubtedly be thanking his lucky stars that this is the case. Anxious moments occurred when Everton’s Nathan Patterson sustained an injury this week that may keep him out for a long and Brentford’s Aaron Hickey may not play for his team for the remainder of the season.
The full-back has been absent from a few Scotland selections, but he showed against England in the most recent tournament that he can perform well when thrown in at the deep end. The manager is devoted to his players, and Steve Clarke has a soft spot for the player from his days at Kilmarnock.
The Celtic defender has participated in more squads recently and made a couple appearances on the pitch. Although he doesn’t play frequently for the Hoops, he is unquestionably a reliable player when needed.
Though it may seem improbable, the defender has filled in on the right side in the past. He’ll likely be in the starting lineup as a left-back as well, although Clarke may be able to choose another spot in a different position. Another unlikely option is Kieran Tierney, who has previously played on the right.
