The 27-year-old, who moved to Bramall Lane from Swansea City almost five years ago in 2019, has since become a fixture on the team. He has made 156 appearances for the team and netted 28 goals in that time.

But with his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign, it’s unclear what lies ahead for the Scotland-capped frontman. He used to be associated with Rangers, a team he used to support.

He has now acknowledged that he would like to play in an Old Firm match, raising the prospect of a future move to Ibrox. In an interview with the Stomping Ground podcast, he stated: “Hey, this is no ordinary club. Have you visited the Old Firm before?

I’ve attended a lot of Old Firms, but I’ve never played or watched a game quite like it. The majority of those who have visited them will agree.

“I’ve always wanted to play for the Rangers, and I was a huge fan growing up. It all comes down to time. By the time my career ends, I aspire to have played for the Rangers. I’m hoping to see that aspect of it. I do not if I do not. However, my goal is to be able to claim that I have played in an Old Firm at some point in my career.”

McBurnie might get to witness the Steel City derby the following season if the Blades decide to keep him. While Sheffield Wednesday, their fierce rivals, may be able to avoid relegation to the second division, Sheffield United seems destined for a return to the Championship.
