Amidst continued speculation about a potential acquisition of the team, Sheffield United is still waiting patiently in the transfer market.
The unidentified creators of a California-based capital investment fund are still considering acquiring Sheffield United as the 2024–25 Championship campaign draws near.
The Star revealed earlier this week that the potential new owners are both expats who are familiar with English football culture, which is a positive development in the current dispute. In an effort to learn more about the team and its culture, the two have also gone to a number of United games over the past year or so.
Although The Star is aware that any Blades transfers requiring a fee are being delayed by the takeover process, the transfer window has been open since June 14. According to recent reports, one former United target has moved to Serie A, and another Blades target is about to make a contract decision.
Godfrey completes Serie A switch
Everton defender Ben Godfrey has joined Europa League winners Atalanta for an undisclosed fee, reported to be in the region of £10m. United had eyed a move for Godfrey back in January, while Joe Worrall and Harry Souttar were also players of interest before the Blades secured a loan deal for Toffees defender Mason Holgate. Godfrey was strongly linked with a departure from Goodison Park due to a lack of minutes. The 26-year-old featured just 16 times in all competitions last season.
In January, Everton manager Sean Dyche stated, “Ben is going along well.” “His attitude is excellent here, and the group thinks highly of him. He is plainly frustrated that he hasn’t had as much playing time. I have to be clear: his frustration is with not being able to play, not with me or the circumstances. Nonetheless, he keeps pushing the group and himself because he is an incredible pro. And that characterises him as a guy.
“Ben Godfrey has left Everton to sign for Serie A club Atalanta for an undisclosed fee,” according to a statement on the Everton website. The 26-year-old defender, who came from Norwich City in October 2020, departs after making 93 appearances for the Blues.
Godfrey, who played under closed doors at Goodison owing to Covid-19, made his Toffees debut in the 2-2 Merseyside derby draw on October 17, 2020. Godfrey won his two England caps during his time at Everton. Ben has served the Everton team with great honour, and the entire Everton team wishes him well in his future endeavours.
Shackleton contract decision looms
At the beginning of June, Leeds announced that Shackleton was one of two players in discussions with Elland Road to extend his contract. He is free to speak with other clubs now that his present contract is expiring. Although his contract expiration does not mean he will leave Elland Road, the Blades will undoubtedly be keeping an eye on the issue.
In other news, Leeds is also expected to lose Archie Grey, a teenage midfielder, to Brentford of the Premier League, who is nearing a £40 million transfer. Grey and Thomas Frank’s team have reached a personal terms agreement, and Grey is scheduled for a West London medical, according to a report from the YEP on Saturday. The teams are still negotiating the terms of the payment plan for the £40 million deal that Leeds and Brentford have agreed upon. This is a club record signing for the Bees. Additionally, his transfer would set a British record for a teenage move.
