One Sheffield Wednesday player is expected to join League One after leaving the team this summer.
Only Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have signed new contracts out of the seven players Sheffield Wednesday gave new deals to last month.
Josh Windass has previously acknowledged that Danny Rohl’s contract extension might be essential to his continued employment with the team, and it appears that most of the players who were out of contract would have agreed to the same.
After making just eighteen appearances in the Championship the previous season, Cameron Dawson is one player whose contract offer surprised a lot of people.
Although Dawson made his senior debut for the Owls in 2013, he has not been able to establish himself as a regular; in 2018–19, he made 26 starts, which was the most appearances in a single league season.
It was anticipated that the 28-year-old will become a free agent this summer and depart Hillsborough when James Beadle arrived on loan in January, taking his spot.
He has been presented with new terms, though, and it is unclear if he will accept them.
Journalist Rob Staton thinks that Dawson might leave Wednesday, even though it was his boyhood team, in quest of regular first team football.
Cameron Dawson urged to join local rivals
Staton stated on the Football Heaven podcast: “I think it’s more likely now that they’ve stayed up that we’ll try to get James Beadle back.” There’s no reason to consider why that couldn’t occur. You would imagine that he would return if someone were to offer him a huge loan fee.
What does Cam Dawson do then? Does he wish to start again somewhere else as an understudy? It’s challenging when you’ve played club football your entire life, but I would have assumed that a fresh start is preferable.
“He could be a great asset to League One clubs.” Well, why not? Barnsley might be a wise investment. Another would be Rotherham. He is an excellent goalie.
Cameron Dawson’s exit would benefit both parties
Goalkeepers can play until much later in life, but Cameron Dawson, who will turn 29 next month, is not likely to get much better.
The custodian has been a reliable backup, but it is unlikely that he will force his way back into the starting lineup, and he undoubtedly would much rather be playing football on a daily basis.
Given that Dawson is reportedly earning over £8,000 a week, getting rid of him before the transfer market opens could be quite beneficial.
The 28-year-old ought to choose to go to League One and establish himself as a key member of a team vying for promotion.
