On September 19, at Handsworth Road, Sheffield, the 39-year-old victim was bitten by Thair Iqbal’s mastiff-type dog.

The victim sustained injuries to his hand and upper body, according to South Yorkshire Police. His dog was slightly hurt.

Iqbal, 54, of Handsworth Road, was made to perform 120 hours of unpaid labour after he acknowledged letting a dog go amok.

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court condemned him on Friday. In addition, he had to pay a victim surcharge of £114 and court costs of £85.

Following the event, South Yorkshire Police reported that they had received several calls from locals who were worried about the dog and the risk it posed.
According to the force, parents whose kids attend a neighbouring nursery had also voiced concerns about the animals’ close closeness to the site.

After the hearing, Ch Insp Emma Cheney made the following statement: “This investigation’s victim was bitten because of negligent dog ownership.

“The owner had abandoned his property and left his dog in the garden. He was not aware of the dog’s activities when it was on the loose, and his fencing was too low to keep it contained.

“You are in charge of your dog’s behaviour. You will be the one attending court if your dog injures someone or causes alarm.”

The canine was signed over to police following the attack and was later put down.
