This season, there was a chance that Marvin Johnson might not play for Sheffield Wednesday ever again.

However, Johnson has flourished under Danny Röhl following Xisco’s departure, when he was almost absent from the team. Johnson believes he was able to learn from what was an extremely trying time.

The wide player, who acknowledged the significance of his family during this journey, has played in 21 Championship games under Röhl since his reintroduction to the team against Bristol City in November. Johnson feels that the manager’s faith in him, despite rumours of Ipswich Town’s interest, has helped him advance.

Regarding his early-season absence from the team, he stated, “That all helped me reflect on a lot.” particularly in football. But I persevered and overcame it, and ever since I’ve resumed playing, I’ve just had the constant thought that I need to do well. I have to perform well on the pitch.

“Your performance for the team should be your main priority so that others can perform well around you. Since then, I’ve operated under that mentality, and I believe it’s been crucial.

“We had a talk as soon as the manager arrived, and that was pretty much it. After we had sat down and been honest with one another, we were done. I indicated that I knew right away what I could add to the team, and he said he’d take a look. From there, we moved forward.

“For me, it was about confirming my correctness, putting my all into games, and winning.” As I mentioned earlier, I am confident in my abilities, therefore I know that if I am correct and fit, I can do well.

“It was a huge boost for me when the attention came in January, which after those two or three months was probably miles away from what anyone would have imagined.

“I think the biggest boost was when I spoke with the gaffer, who told me it was good news for both of us because it meant that we were both doing something right.”
