The announcement was made by Sheffield Wednesday that they will recruit Max Lowe on a free transfer when his Sheffield United contract expires on July 1.

After only four starts in Chris Wilder’s team’s previous season, Lowe, who has been with The Blades for the past four years, moves across Steel City to look for regular football. His playing time has been restricted by a variety of injuries in recent years, so he’ll be looking to get off to a quick start at Hillsborough.

The 27-year-old is a flexible option for Danny Röhl to add to his team as they try to improve on their 20th place result in the Championship from the previous season. He is at ease playing left defender, left wing-back, and holding midfield.

In his early career, Lowe participated in youth international competitions, representing England at the Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, and Under-20 levels while making his breakthrough at Derby County.

After spending time on loan at Shrewsbury Town, Aberdeen, and Nottingham Forest, where he started 19 games for Steve Cooper’s team in their 2021–22 promotion-winning campaign, the new man at Hillsborough is undoubtedly now an experienced operator.

After making appearances for Derby, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United, he is about to become just the third player to cross the finish line in both the Steel City and East Midlands derbies. He would enter the select group along with Terry Curran and David McGoldrick.

The highly experienced Marvin Johnson, who started 25 of Wednesday’s games last season and mostly played left wing-back, might have some healthy competition from Lowe. Last month, the team used its option to extend the 33-year-old’s deal.

He joins the Owls as their second free agent of the year a few days after it was revealed that Ben Hamer, whose contract with Watford expires on July 1st, will also be signed.

Max Lowe has demonstrated that he can be a highly valuable addition to a Championship team when playing for Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest in 2022 and 2023. Wednesday fans will be hoping that their gamble of adding a guy who has only made four starts in the previous season pays off, but signing a player is always risky.

Danny Röhl and his team won’t be expected to be aiming for anything close to the play-off spots after barely avoiding relegation during a stormy season the previous year. This time around, consistency and safety will be the main goals. The athlete may find that playing for a team with low expectations and receiving consistent minutes is all they need to turn around a previously extremely promising career.
