It is anticipated that a Sheffield Wednesday first-team member will leave during the January transfer window.
The January transfer window might be another important one for Sheffield Wednesday when it reopens in two and a half months.
With all of Ike Ugbo, James Beadle, and Ian Poveda signed on loan by Danny Rohl, the Owls’ January trade activity from the previous season may have kept them in the Championship.
Midway through the season, the January window is a critical refuelling point for every team in the Championship, regardless of whether they’re fighting for promotion or relegation.
As Rohl attempts to imbue the team with his own identity, the Owls may also use the winter window as an opportunity to further reduce the size of their starting lineup.
A few players—young ones in particular—might be ready to go on loan in January.
Additionally, the Owls may try to cut some less-used players from their payroll or they may try to push for their departure.
One such player might be Callum Paterson.
Paterson, 29, made his first Championship appearance of the season in the 2-1 win against Coventry City last time out, coming off the bench in the final minutes
This season, the Scot has participated in the Carabao Cup. Even in the season’s opening 5-1 victory over Grimsby Town, he scored twice.
But in the Championship, Rohl hasn’t given Paterson any preference. Paterson’s contract expires at the end of current season, thus this comes after he expressed interest in transferring near the conclusion of the summer window.
Former Owl and current pundit Carlton Palmer made the following remarks to Football League World:
“Callum wants to play football for the first team, without a doubt, and he will want to move on at some point if he can’t be guaranteed that at Sheffield Wednesday.”
Palmer went on, “It will be intriguing to watch what happens. I don’t think Sheffield Wednesday will try to offload him, but I also don’t think they will stand in Callum’s way if he approaches them and requests to play football for the first team.
Since joining Sheffield Wednesday, he has improved so much that I don’t think the team would stop him if he decided in January that he needed to move on and play football elsewhere.
There would be plenty of people interested in Callum Paterson.
