Midfielder George Byers, 27, is free to sign with any team as of Wednesday, since the team stated they would not be renewing his contract past this summer.
After spending the second half of the previous season on loan at Blackpool, several in League One, notably Birmingham City, who were just relegated, are eager to sign Byers.
Parkinson needs to upgrade his engine room, since he only has George Evans, Andy Cannon, Elliot Lee, James Jones, and Jordan Davies to pick from in midfield.
With 76 appearances in the third division, Byers would provide challenge for Cannon’s starting spot in the starting lineup and be an improvement over Jones and Davies.
The former Sheffield Wednesday player and the Englishman are identical in terms of intensity, tenacity, and ghosting into the box.
George Byers can rival Andy Cannon
After playing 162 games in League One, Cannon had a stellar season in League Two and is primed for a fast promotion.
Without a question, the former Hull City player will start going forward, but he will need competition for a spot in the starting lineup, and that competition may come from Byers.
Journalist Joe Crann of the Sheffield Star once called the gifted midfield player “silky.” At Blackpool, he showed off this quality by finishing 89% of passes in his half and 65% of his dribbles.
Byers would contribute the quality of organisation to Wrexham’s midfield. The Reds will require a midfield metronome to keep things moving because they were accustomed to controlling possession in the fourth division.
But with his experience at this level and ability to compete with Cannon, Byers would be a more affordable choice for Parkinson to take into account, especially since centre depth is so crucial.
