A 46-year-old man was freed under investigation after being detained as part of an inquiry into PPE Medpro, a business that was given significant government contracts to provide protective gear during the Covid epidemic.

He was arrested on Wednesday morning at his Barnet home and imprisoned by the National Crime Agency, who held him in for interrogation overnight.

He was detained on allegations of trying to rig the legal system and conspiring to commit fraud.

The company, connected to Conservative colleague Michelle Mone, is under investigation for contracts it was given during the pandemic.

For PPE in the early stages of the pandemic, PPE Medpro was able to acquire two contracts totaling £203 million.

Baroness Michelle Mone suggested the group, managed by Doug Barrowman, to ministers, and they were given contracts worth over £200 million to supply personal protective equipment.

A scandal has surrounded 52-year-old Baroness Mone and her 59-year-old husband Doug Barrowman regarding the so-called “VIP lane” contracts that were given to certain suppliers during the coronavirus period.

Both Mone and Barrowman have refuted the accusations made against them, stating that the gowns were delivered in compliance with the terms of the agreement.

Since then, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has opened a breach of contract case regarding the 2020 gown supply agreement.
