Washington’s legendary offensive coordinator isn’t a favorite for the remaining NFL HC spot.

Carolina hired a head coach before the Washington Commanders. Some of the top applicants continued in their coordinator roles, but they found someone to take the job. Dave Canales becomes Panthers head coach after one season as OC. God bless him as he navigates his personal and professional challenges as a David Tepper employee. As the only NFL club without a head coach, the Commanders appear uninterested in hiring one.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter claimed on Sportscenter on Tuesday that the Commanders’ top candidates are Dan Quinn, Aaron Glenn, and Anthony Weaver, but because they have no other teams to compete with, they will choose a head coach at their own speed. Sam Howell: Tank Commander or Kirk Cousins 2.0?

Media is turning Sam Howell into a thirst trap.

Schefter told Sportscenter, “There’s no rush in Washington to get something done right now.” “They may take a day or a week, we’ll see.

Please take your time, Commanders. No big events this week. Except for the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where top draft picks practice head-to-head. Perhaps offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is not a frontrunner for the head coaching position if there is no conclusive answer.

Last year, Washington touted his hire. New offensive coordinator news conferences are rarely handled like head coaching hires. He was brought in to spice up an offense that could have made the playoffs last season with more firepower.

Bieniemy’s defense was much poorer in 2023 than 2022. The defensive line was destroyed after Chase Young and Montez Sweat were moved, while Darrick Forrest, one of their top defensive backs, missed much of the season on IR with a shoulder injury. They ended 31st in defensive DVOA. Schefter suggests that a steep decline may explain why the Commanders’ top three head coaches are defensive coordinators.

Offense: Sam Howell threw for yards and interceptions. Following a leg shot six weeks before the 2022 season, Brian Robinson Jr. achieved a remarkable return. The offense’s five yards per play and 26th DVOA were low. The Commanders attack had explosive moments early in the season, but getting Terry McLaurin the ball was a challenge. Even with Jacoby Brissett eating into his snaps in Weeks 15 and 16, Howell passed for almost 4,000 yards. McLaurin deserved more than 1,009 yards this year.

When the season ended, the Commanders averaged nearly a half point higher per game than in 2022, and their yards per play rose from 4.9 to 5. Bieniemy had a turnover-prone QB and a completely different offensive line in his debut season as a starter.

After failing, Washington got a draft to reward it. Bieniemy can shape a quarterback with the No. 2 overall choice and utilize him for his next head coaching audition.

Bieniemy interviewed for the Commanders’ head coaching position, but Schefter’s Sportscenter hit makes it unlikely. Drake Maye may earn Offensive Rookie of the Year next season and give Bieniemy his first head coaching job.
