Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers was on fire, scoring a franchise-record 70 points in a 133-123 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night.

Embiid, a 29-year-old center-forward, recorded a career-high 70 points and 18 rebounds. He broke NBA Hall of Fame Wilt Chamberlain’s Philadelphia record of 68 points, which he achieved on December 16, 1967.

Chamberlain was a Philadelphia Warriors player when he established the NBA record for 100 points. The Warriors were created in Philadelphia in 1946, but they relocated to San Francisco in 1962. The team’s name was changed in 1971 to Golden State Warriors, and it has been a Western Conference franchise for decades.

“He is the reason I started playing basketball. It’s strange, he got 81 the same night, and he was my favorite player.”
Embiid was not the only player to deliver an outstanding effort on Monday.

Separately, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns, 28, set a franchise record with 62 points against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday, an uncommon night in the NBA.
Towns scored 44 points in the first half, but the Hornets rallied from an 18-point hole to defeat the Timberwolves 128-125 in Minneapolis.
