Joel Embiid, the Philadelphia 76ers’ center, has a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee and will be out of the lineup until at least the weekend.
Embiid was initially scheduled to sit out Thursday night against Utah, but he will now also miss a game against Brooklyn on Saturday.
Embiid injured his left knee during a loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night. He had an MRI that indicated the injury. The 76ers’ treatment strategy is still being finalized.
Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors landed on Embiid’s left leg, injuring him.
This was Embiid’s return to action after a left knee injury kept him out of Saturday’s game against Denver, which meant he would miss a highly anticipated duel with two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and Monday’s game against Portland.
Embiid has already missed 12 games this season, hurting his hopes of winning his second MVP title. To be eligible for awards such as MVP or All-NBA teams under the new collective bargaining agreement, players must typically play in 65 regular-season games.
When healthy, Embiid has continued to perform at MVP levels. He leads the NBA in scoring with 35.3 points per game and averages 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists. On Jan. 22, he set a franchise-record 70 points and 18 rebounds in a 133-124 win over San Antonio.
On their five-game trip, the 76ers have gone 0-4.
