Samsunspor’s loan offer might jolt Alfredo Morelos back to Europe.
After Santos was relegated to the Brazilian second tier for the first time in their 111-year history, the former Rangers striker had to reduce his £40,000-a-week contract to half of that in order to sign a new agreement last week.
Morelos substituted in the second half for Santos for the first time this season. However, his injury-plagued stay in Brazil has been a significant disappointment, with no goals since September.
Now he could join Samsunspor on loan with an option to buy.
The Turkish transfer market opens till Friday night, and cash-strapped Santos is unlikely to be difficult to work with after president Marcelo Teixeira complained about Morelos’ first contract from the previous regime.
He said: “We renegotiated Alfredo Morelos’ contract because terminating it would have been too expensive.
“He is a high-earning sportsman. His initial deal was excessive.”
When he left Rangers at the end of last season, Fenerbahce was the strongest Turkish team interested in signing the 27-year-old.
He might eventually travel to Europe and join Samsunspor, who were promoted last season and are two points above the Turkish Super League drop zone.
