Detroit’s historic playoff journey ended this weekend with a devastating loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Detroit held a 24-7 lead at halftime but struggled in the second half and head coach Dan Campbell’s fourth-down calls were dubious. After the game, the Lions’ veteran quarterback was reported to retire this year, stunning NFL fans.

Since being chosen in 2014, NFL journeyman and Detroit quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is likely to play his farewell game. Bridgewater played for multiple teams and backupd Jared Goff in 2023. Bridgewater and his head coach left the field together in a shot posted on social media after he announced that 2023 would be his last season.

The veteran explained why he retired in 2023 and claimed he is happy with his career.

I was young and caught in this lifestyle believing I was a football player 24/7, but when I got wounded, I discovered I only play for three hours on Sunday afternoons. Outside of that, I’m Theodore Bridgewater, so that put things in perspective and helped me stop worrying about not starting.

I think, ‘Man, I still got purpose.’ I have a greater mission than football. Football is my platform.

Bridgewater played for the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins before joining Detroit. His career includes 15,120 throwing yards and 75 touchdowns, and three seasons with over 3,000 yards. Many NFL fans will remember him as a good quarterback and a fine person despite his horrific injuries.
