The Flyers decide to extend Ryan Poehling’s contract for another two years.
General Manager Daniel Briere said today that the Philadelphia Flyers have signed forward Ryan Poehling to a two-year, $3.8 million deal extension ($1.9 million AAV) that will begin with the 2024–25 season.
Poehling, who turned 25 on January 3, 1999, has 14 points (5-9=14) in 45 games for the Flyers in his first season. The 204-pound, 6-foot-2 forward from Lakeville, Minn., blocks 45 shots, which is the most on the team, and scores two points when they don’t have the ball. He tied his career high with three points (1-2=3) against CBJ on November 19. His goal was the game-winner. The left-shot forward scored five goals in a game on December 19 at NJD. Philly signed him as a free agent on July 1, 2023.
Poehling has played in 183 NHL games over the course of five seasons with Montreal, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia (2018–24). He has scored three shorthanded goals, five game-winning goals, and racked up 24 penalty minutes. The Montreal Canadiens picked him in the first round (25th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. He played his first game in the NHL on April 6, 2019, against Toronto. He became the first Canadiens player since Alex Smart on January 14, 1943, to score three goals in his first NHL game. It was his first hat trick.
Poehling has played for the United States at the World Juniors U18 Championship (gold) in 2017, the World Junior U20 Championship (bronze), and the World Junior U20 Championship (silver) in 2019. At the 2019 World Junior Championship, he won three awards: he was named to the All-Star Team, was named Best Forward, and was named Most Valuable Player.
