Jamie Vardy has 180 goals in 449 Leicester City games and has no plans to retire.
Jamie Vardy has scored double figures in Leicester City jerseys for the ninth time in 11 seasons, but the Foxes legend has no plans to retire despite his age and contract status. On Saturday, Vardy, 37, scored twice in City’s thumping of Stoke City, giving him ten goals for the season.
Vardy’s next appearance, for Leicester at Watford this weekend, will be his 450th since joining from Fleetwood Town for £1m in 2012. The forward has scored 180 goals, won three medals, played in the Champions League, and represented England at key competitions.
Vardy has scored five goals in his last five outings after missing December and the festive schedule due to a knee injury. Although his role in the squad has changed after the drop to the Championship and Enzo Maresca’s ideas, he still wants to play and prepare for the run-in. Vardy hopes to continue this summer.
“Obviously, like everyone, you want to be playing as much as you can, but if you’re on the bench and you’re coming on, you have to make sure you make an impact,” Vardy said. “37 is just a number. You feel young. I take care of myself and stay fit to last. Football is strenuous, so you recuperate well and prepare for the next game.
“With the advancement of technology, there are more rehabilitation options. I was lucky enough to incorporate that into my house, so any extra recovery I can do at home when we’re not training helps. If I keep doing it, I’ll feel fresh.
It’s never too late to learn something new. Maresca wants us to play that manner, so on the training pitch, you must take that, practice it, and make sure you can do it to get into his team. Our football game is fun for me. The addition of a new dimension to my game is wonderful.”
