The St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed the re-signing of young gun fullback Tyrell Sloan.
Sloan had already requested to be released from the team. He was initially scheduled to go off contract at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign.
Sloan, a local junior who was a member of the side that won the 2019 SG Ball Premiership, resigned on a two-year extension after the release request vanished early this year.
Jayden Sullivan and Talatau Amone were among the other players on that same underage squad in 2019.
With his two-year agreement, Sloan will remain in the red and white through at least the end of 2026.
Sloan, according to coach Shane Flanagan, is still getting better.
“Tyrell is a dynamic young player who keeps learning and getting better every week,” Flanagan stated in a news release from the team verifying the information.
“His attempts to get better This year, every aspect of his game has been incredibly enjoyable.
“We anticipate watching him continue to grow at the Dragons in the upcoming seasons.”
Despite rumours in the preseason that Zac Lomax might have been a strong contender for the position of top jumper for the Dragons, Sloan has remained the team’s first-choice fullback this year.
Even though Sloan plays outstanding offensive football, concerns about his defence have persisted, even though 2024 appears to be his first NRL season.
Since making his NRL debut in 2021, the fullback has played 48 games for the Dragons and scored 25 tries.
He wants to play more, but that doesn’t mean he will always be the Dragons’ first-choice fullback. At the end of the season, the team loses Zac Lomax to the Parramatta Eels and have also made an effort to sign players like Sunia Turuva, an off-contract Penrith Panther standout who is now playing for the Wests Tigers.
However, Sloan is now probably guaranteed to wear the Dragons’ number one shirt for the foreseeable future due to the absence of Turuva and the loss of Lomax.
