The St. Mirren Football Club is happy to announce that Alex Gogic has decided to stay with the Saints for a further three years, signing a new contract.

The contract for the Cypriot defender was about to expire this summer, but he has since agreed to a new deal that would keep him with the team through the summer of 2027.

Since joining the team on loan from Hibernian in January 2022 and then obtaining a permanent contract in August of the same year, Alex has been a major fan favourite.

Alex, a 29-time Cyprus cap, scored his first goal for Saints in a 1-1 draw with Motherwell in February 2022. Since then, he has played in 90 games for the Buddies, scoring seven goals, the most recent of which was in the crucial victory on Saturday.

He has received a lot of praise for his center-half efforts this season as Saints attempt to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1987.

In an interview with stmirren.com, Alex stated: “I’m thrilled.

“We’ve been chatting for a while, but after Saturday, I’m glad it’s over because I wanted to concentrate on the games.

I’m probably playing the best football I have ever played. Big credit to the gaffer playing me at centre-back. I always fight against it but I’m happy I’ve had a great season and I think it’s a big help from the players and all of the staff.

“It was an easy decision because of the love I received from the fans as well as the players and staff from the moment I joined. From the first day, the fans have been nothing short of incredible.

I want to thank all my teammates for making this decision easy, the gaffer, all the staff and Jim Gillespie as well.

“Goga has been exceptional this season and the previous season,” manager Stephen Robinson said, expressing his excitement at the deal’s confirmation.

“Because he can play multiple positions, he’s like two players in one. He performs best in the middle of a back three, but we also know that he can play in midfield on occasion.

It’s something we’ve been speaking about for a long time. He’s vital in terms of building the club and taking it forward. It’s a statement of intent from us going forward.

He could have stayed in Scotland or England, but he made the decision to remain here. He is thrilled to be here, as is his family, and he is confident that our group of guys will only become better. It’s evident he’s having fun with football.

We’ve gone all out to ensure he stays. We were always quietly confident in the background as we knew he and his family were happy and we’re just delighted to get it over the line now.”
