Steven looks forward with Jon Walters to get Stoke City firing

News from the bet365 Stadium as Jon Walters is appointed sporting director to work alongside head coach Steven Schumacher and find a long-awaited recipe for success

After Jon Walters was named sporting director this week, Steven Schumacher told him, “let’s get to work,” propelling Stoke City forward.

Walters, who first returned to Stoke in February as an interim technical director, and Schumacher, who took over as head coach in December, have a cordial and open relationship.

While there are similarities between the two—they are of similar ages and were both raised as Everton supporters—their mutual resolve to improve Stoke’s lot in life is currently what unites them most.

It’s been going well, Schumacher added. We’ve gotten along great. From the beginning, we told each other to just be honest, have the necessary talks, and come to an understanding. We have a probability of succeeding if we take that action.

“I’m very happy for him. He has put in a lot of work since being here and is passionate about Stoke City. John Coates clearly saw that and wanted to give him the opportunity to assume that role.

“Congratulations to Jon, and now let’s get to work making sure we have everything we need to get better results.”

Stoke has been in a fierce battle to stay in the Championship, winning three and drawing two of their previous seven games. This evening (8pm), they travel to Swansea for a contest in which a victory would be monumental for both teams. With Swansea four points above the relegation zone and Stoke three, they are currently only one point apart in terms of position.
