Updates from the Championship: players set to depart this summer are confirmed by Rotherham United, Stoke City, and Coventry City
Favourite Liam Kelly of Coventry City will be free agency this summer when retained lists start to disappear throughout the Championship.
After 180 games played for the team since 2017, Captain Kelly is departing Coventry. During that time, he has helped the team achieve promotion from League Two and League One, make it to the Championship play-off final, and get to the FA Cup semi-final this season. Goalie Simon Moore is also bidding adieu, while manager Mark Robins is negotiating to keep top player Callum O’Hare longer.
“Liam Kelly will be rightfully lauded as a club legend,” stated Robins. He has contributed significantly to Coventry City’s ascent through the divisions in recent years and has always operated with the utmost professionalism both on and off the pitch.”
After a season, Stoke City alumnus Sam Clucas is heading out of Rotherham. The 33-year-old midfielder has made 32 appearances for the Millers in what has proven to be a challenging season, tallying one goal and two assists. They had already been demoted to League One when Steve Evans took over as manager during the last week of the season.
Ten other players, including midfielders Cafu and Shane Ferguson and defenders Sean Morrison, Lee Peltier, Grant Hall, and Tyler Blackett, also scheduled to be released.
Stoke has taken care of the players’ contracts in the first team group. Tyrese Campbell is departing, re Jordan Thompson has exercised his one-year option, and negotiations with Enda Stevens are still in progress. While Ciaran Clark and Wesley go, Frank Fielding remains.
