Police in Sutton will be looking into the death caused by a fire.

Just before nine this morning (Saturday, May 4), emergency services were called to Church Hill Road in North Cheam.

The building contained a body.

Authorities think they are in contact with the person’s family and know who they are.

Although the cause of the fire is being looked into, at this early point it is not thought to be suspicious.

“Emergency services were called shortly before 09:00hrs on Saturday, May 4th, to an outbuilding on fire at residential premises in Church Hill Road, North Cheam,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated.

“Officers from LFB and LAS attended with their colleagues.

Regretfully, a body was discovered within the outbuilding.

Officers think they are in contact with the person’s family and know who this person is.

Officers and their LFB colleagues are investigating the cause of the fire.

“At this early stage, there is no suspicion that the fire is suspicious, but investigations are ongoing.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesman stated: “Unfortunately, a person has passed away as a result of a fire in North Cheam.

“A fire at a garden on Church Hill Road was responded to by four fire engines and about twenty-five personnel.

“The fire totally destroyed a one-story garden office.

“During the course of combating fires, firefighters came upon a person who was tragically pronounced dead on the spot.

At 0855, the Brigade got the first of 16 calls reporting the fire, and by 1018, the situation had been brought under control.

“Sutton, Mitcham, New Malden, and neighbouring fire stations sent firefighters to the scene.

“The fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.”
