To raise money for its efforts to support people in Purbeck and around East Dorset who are facing life-limiting illnesses and their families, Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is constructing a new store in Swanage’s downtown.

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 10 a.m., Swanage Town Deputy Mayor Chris Moreton will formally open the shop, which is filled with gently used goods. Everyone is welcome to visit the shop on Station Road.

Since 4 Moochers, a home goods store, closed, the space at 31 Station Road—between Nationwide Building Society and The Swanage Bookshop—has been vacant.

It’s currently being renovated and filled with books, clothes, and trinkets to encourage eco-friendly shopping and create jobs in the area.
Run by resident of Swanage Heidi Stearn, an experienced shop manager, with help from fellow resident Kate Gwilliam.

“We’re having a grand opening on Wednesday and everyone is welcome to pop in and have a browse.

“If anyone has any donations to bring with them, that would be great. What we are most in need of are good quality men’s and women’s clothing, bric-a-brac and books – books are always popular!

“The aim is not only to raise money but also to ensure that goods that could just be thrown away are reused – that’s so much more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

“But Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is a local charity and does deliver a much needed and appreciated service to our community in Swanage, so it’s also good to be able to help support its valuable work.”

In addition to helping people with terminal illnesses, Lewis-Manning Hospice Care also offers care to their relatives.

Free services offered include day hospice care, several clinics, wellness programmes, bereavement support, and more.
Swanage Hospital has opened a breathlessness clinic to assist patients with respiratory diseases that can be fatal, like lung cancer and COPD.

With the help of strategies to lessen dyspnea, the programme seeks to help patients better control their symptoms. All of this is made feasible by its fundraising endeavours.
