Barcelona is getting ready to make a £60 million offer for former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in an attempt to sign him to a contract at the Nou Camp.
After spending almost £26 million to join Marseille over the summer, Greenwood has been in incredible form, netting five goals in his opening six games for the French team.
The 23-year-old, who has not featured for his boyhood team Manchester United since January 2022, spent the previous season on loan at La Liga team Getafe.
Greenwood was one of the brightest prospects at Old Trafford – making over 100 first-team appearances by the times he aged 20 – but was released after a six-month internal probe into his conduct.
In February 2023, serious allegations against Greenwood—including assault and attempted rape—were dismissed.
Due to the England international’s impressive play for Marseille, Barcelona has made the attacker one of their top targets for the next summer transfer window.
The Sun claims that after sending scouts to at least four of Greenwood’s games this season, Barca is prepared to make a sizable offer for the player.
When Greenwood was at rival La Liga team Getafe the previous season, Barcelona is also thought to have been following him and was pleased with what they saw.
However, Barca, who lead the Spanish top division by three points at the moment, will have fierce competition for Greenwood, as the French champions Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed interest in signing him.
Given that Greenwood moved from Manchester to France and appears to be settling in, PSG may have an early advantage over Barcelona.
Although attempts for the Englishman have recently been connected to Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, it is currently believed that Barcelona is showing a more serious interest in the player.
When Marseille, who are third in Ligue 1, chose to recruit Greenwood from Manchester United, their own mayor blasted the team.
However, the president of the team has stated that he has no regrets about the transfer, which reunited Greenwood with Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi, a former Brighton player.
“The mayor’s remarks support what we did; they were not privy to all the information,” Pablo Longoria, the head of Marseille, said.
“We made the choice internally.” Yes, there was some pushback, which was understandable, but it also gave us the authority to use all the available evidence to make the best decision—which I believe we did—instead of looking into the matter further. After all, I’m not a judge.
Mason’s name was brought up in our very first meeting with the coach, Roberto de Zerbi.
The coach had previously worked with Mason, so we had a little chat at first since we all thought Mason had potential.
We all had a great deal of chats in the weeks preceding his move. He is acting wonderfully around us, and we are thrilled to have him on the team.
Due to Manchester United, Greenwood’s old team, having a terrible start to the new campaign, there has been a lot of conjecture over the future of manager Erik ten Hag, who is currently under pressure.
After losing 3-0 to Tottenham on Sunday, United dropped to 13th place in the Premier League standings. The team has only managed seven points from its first six games.
