Matt Carson and Ed Palmer became the latest additions to Paul Wotton’s new-look 2024/25 squad,
Torquay United has added two more players, accelerating their preseason roster building. Ed Palmer and Matt Carson were the most recent additions to Paul Wotton’s revamped 2024–25 team.
Prior to joining Southampton, Carson, 20, advanced through the ranks at Glentoran. His poised performances at left back helped The Saints win the 2020–21 Premier League South in 2021.
The teenage defender signed his first professional contract in March 2023 after playing for a youthful Southampton team in their Football League Trophy match against Forest Green Rovers in August 2022. He also had multiple call-ups to Southampton’s B team.
Carson received notoriety on a global scale as well, having represented Northern Ireland at the U16, U18, and U19 levels. Prior to signing a one-year contract, Carson experienced National League South football for the first time while on loan with Braintree last season.
It happened as Palmer, a former Gulls rookie, returned to Plaimoor. Central defender Palmer started his career by working his way up through Torquay’s youth ranks before turning professional. He later established himself as a dependable member of the backlines of several teams, including Tiverton, Taunton, and Weymouth. After moving to Truro City, Palmer initially connected with Gulls manager Wotton.
With a wealth of experience gained since leaving the English Riviera in 2011, 32-year-old Palmer is eager to establish himself in The Gulls’ lineup as a senior pro after earning praise for his play for the Cornish team last season. Palmer is returning to the area for a one-year contract.
