Up to 40 jobs will be created when the Aldi supermarket that is being built next to two football teams opens in August.
On formerly undeveloped property near AFC Totton and Totton and Eling FC, which occupy adjacent sites at Salisbury Road in Calmore, a 1,890 square metre cheap store is emerging.
In December 2022, the plan was approved by the New Forest District Council.
Although there is a risk of unauthorised parking on match days, a report to members stated that “the [proposed] development is positive overall.”
“It will provide a further choice of supermarket to serve the community within Totton as well as the proposed housing developments within the local vicinity.”
“A retail impact assessment that takes into account the planned store’s effects on Totton town centre, Southampton city centre, and other centres bolsters the application.
“The council has no evidence to counter the conclusions of the assessment, namely that the impact on Totton town centre and other centres would not be significant.”
It has been stated that the Calmore and Hillstreet regions will see the construction of hundreds of new homes.
