With the end of the League Two season fast approaching, it’s all still to play for as a number of clubs battle it out to win promotion to the third-tier of English football.

Four clubs from League Two will be promoted, three of them automatically and one through the play-offs. This is in contrast to the other two EFL levels.

As things stand, most of the clubs in the top half of the league are still possible to secure seventh place and offer themselves a chance at promotion. This implies that any club that finishes in the top seven has an opportunity to earn promotion.

A thrilling couple of weeks awaits as clubs attempt to secure promotion to League One. Some clubs have played more games than others due to international breaks and cup weekends.

The promotion race, particularly the race for seventh spot, looks set to go to the wire, and all it takes is a good run and a bit of momentum to seal a play-off place. We’ve seen plenty of times before that from there anything can happen.

Carlton Palmer on the League Two promotion race

Carlton Palmer, an EFL analyst and former England player, thinks that while there will be competition for spots, the four teams who presently occupy the top four spots in the league will advance to League One.

Palmer, speaking to Football League World, stated: “As it stands now, I think the four teams to be promoted from League Two will be Mansfield, who are playing really well; Stockport, who have struggled a little but still have a game ahead of them; Wrexham, who have won three, drawn two, and lost one of their last six games; and MK Dons, who have lost their most recent game but have won three and lost three of their previous six games.

Though it will be close, I believe Mansfield, Stockport, and Wrexham will rise on their own.

“Barrow has 64 points, Crewe has 65 points, and MK Dons has 67 points as you look at the play-offs.”

“I think that for the upcoming season, Mansfield, Stockport, Wrexham, and MK Dons will all be promoted from League Two to League One.”

The race for League Two promotion

There are still eight games left for each club in the division, so a lot can happen in the coming weeks. However, the three teams guaranteed to make the playoffs are at least three points clear of MK Dons, who are now in fourth position, and they all have at least one game remaining.

While MK Dons, Crewe, and Barrow appear to be solid picks to advance to the playoffs, the battle for seventh place appears to hold the potential to be the most dramatic in the coming weeks.

Wimbledon trail Gillingham by just one point, while Crawley and Gillingham are tied on points despite having played two extra games.

The teams that are still in the running for the play-offs are Walsall (56), Newport (55), Morecombe (54) and Harrogate (54). As we have seen in the past, the club with the most momentum typically wins the play-offs, not the team that places highest in the league standings.

League Two’s season is about to come to a thrilling close with everything up for grabs.
