Josh Magennis left Wigan Athletic, and Exeter City is in negotiations with him over a possible free move, according to Alan Nixon.
The previous season, Exeter City placed 13th in League One. Gary Caldwell’s team finished comfortably in the middle of the league, just one spot behind Wigan Athletic in 12th place.

Magennis, 33, participated in 42 games for the Tics in all competitions the previous season, recording ten goals and dishing out two assists.

The adaptable striker, who joined the DW Stadium in 2022 and played primarily through the middle for Shaun Maloney last season, is scheduled to depart this month when his contract expires.

Another third-class outfit In an attempt to sign the seasoned attacker on a free transfer this summer, Exeter City is in talks with Magennis. According to Nixon, the Grecians anticipate winning this one.

A solid addition

For Exeter City, Magennis’ coming will be greatly appreciated. The 33-year-old still has the capacity to influence things at this level, and his background is helpful.

Although he hasn’t scored in double figures since 2021, he has been a reliable goal scorer at this level in the past and will strengthen the Grecians’ lineup.

With hopes of finishing in the top half of the table this season, Caldwell will be looking to keep his team’s momentum heading into the new campaign.

Looking up

Despite challenging conditions, Wigan Athletic performed admirably in the previous season, particularly in the early going.

It is hoped that Maloney’s team can focus entirely on getting off to a strong start this summer, and that the Tics will be able to fight for a spot in the top six this season.

It is probably time for both the club and Magennis to part ways, even though they will need to bolster this summer.

The 33-year-old requires regular football, and since Wigan Athletic wants to play at a higher level, it’s possible that he won’t have much of it at the DW Stadium the next year..
