Breidablik winger Jason Dadi Svanthorsson is reportedly being courted by Grimsby Town, according to a report from Icelandic news source Fotboltinet.
Grimsby Town, which narrowly avoided relegation to the National League in the 2023–2024 season, will be aiming to climb further up the League Two standings.

Under Dave Artell’s direction, the Mariners finished 21st and avoided elimination from the Football League together with Forest Green Rovers and Sutton United.
Significant changes are required, or else the North Lincolnshire team can find itself in a similar situation later on. More recruits are being sought after, and interesting connections are now being made from Iceland.

According to Fotboltinet, Grimsby Town is reportedly in negotiations to sign Breidablik, an Icelandic top-flight club, for winger Jon Dadi Svanthorsson.

Additionally, KR Reykjavik, Valur, and Vikingur Reykjavik are interested in him. Later this year, Svanthorsson’s contract expires, thus he might be available at a bargain.

More on Svanthorsson

The report that Grimsby Town is in talks to sign a winger from the Icelandic top division is undoubtedly out of left field, but if it materialises, Svanthorsson might prove to be a very wise signing for the League Two team.

The 24-year-old has played football in Europe and has received five caps for his nation at the international level. Despite finishing last in their UEFA Conference League group this season, Breidablik’s Svanthorsson scored twice in a close 3-2 loss to KAA Gent of Belgium.

Svanthorsson has played exclusively in his native Iceland, managing 22 goals in 55 games for Afturelding before his move to Breidablik. With them, he has notched 38 goals and 26 assists in 127 games across all competitions.

11 goals and four assists have come this season in another strong campaign for the winger.

He plays almost exclusively on the right-wing, but has been deployed on the left and centrally at times too.

The summer window so far

Grimsby Town has signed four players thus far, despite several players going away.
The primary attention has been on the backline. Jordan Wright, the custodian, signed from rival team Lincoln City, while Tyrell Warren, Cameron McJannet, and Matty Carson, the defenders, came from Derry City, Reading, and Barrow, respectively.

Additionally, all four of the new recruits have permanent contracts, so it will be fascinating to see if the loan market is used in the future.

Though it’s unclear if these discussions about Svanthorsson will result in anything, he might be a statement signing for the Mariners during their summer makeover.
