In League Two, Stephen Wearne, a former player for Sunderland, is having a career revival.

Stephen Wearne, a former player for Sunderland’s youth team, is having a career comeback with MK Dons in League Two.

The 23-year-old, who previously played for Middlesbrough and Newcastle United as a young player, left Sunderland in 2022 and went on to play in the National League for North East club Gateshead and in League Two for Grimsby Town.

In January of last year, Wearne made a permanent move back to the EFL, joining MK Dons for an undisclosed fee and rejoining former Gateshead head coach Mike Williamson. Wearne earned his first start for the team on Saturday at the County Ground, where he scored twice in the first eight minutes to give his team the League Two victory.

“I didn’t have any clear cut (chances for a hat-trick), there were a few times where I probably should have gone myself but laid it off, maybe too generous!” Wearne said to the MK Citizen after the game. I’m content with two goals, and winning is what matters most.

It was a satisfying beginning! Although a hat-trick would have been amazing, it was a good start, and hopefully more is ahead.

“I can play a variety of positions because I’m quite versatile, but I’ve never played as a nine there. I discovered this morning, but I like to change things up, sneak up on people, and exert myself. I have a lot of excellent players around me, which makes things much easier for me. They are aware of my whereabouts, and I am aware of theirs, so clearly that worked today.”
