Wakefield Trinity has confirmed the acquisition of former player Tom Johnstone, marking another significant addition for 2025 after Mike McMeeken.

Tom Johnstone, like McMeeken, has agreed to a four-year contract that will keep him with the team until 2028. The club’s aggressive recruitment strategy is a component of their rebuilding after they were relegated from the Super League last year.

The club’s long-term goal to become a top-four Super League team includes the recruiting, which is the result of an investment by new owner Matt Ellis.

Ste Mills, the recruitment manager, presented Wakefield Trinity’s strategy earlier this week to rise to the top of the sport. He clarified that all of the coaching staff, including new addition McMeeken, had signed four-year contracts while speaking on the team’s YouTube account. Now Tom Johnstone is a member of that club.

“Making sure that everything we do is part of a long-term plan is important to us. It is a long-term plan to ensure that we meet the necessary benchmarks; it is not a project that will last two or three years.

Target Tom Johnstone has now been reached, as they verified last night.

Johnstone’s return to Wakefield Trinity seems imminent when it was revealed earlier this week that the Catalans Dragons’ star winger had turned down a “marquee” contract offering a “significant pay increase.”

Before moving to the South of France and eventually arriving at Old Trafford, the winger had made 115 appearances for Trin; yet, Johnstone was drawn to his hometown team.

Wakefield provided confirmation of his arrival through a statement from the club: “Wakefield Trinity has secured the return of Super League side Catalans Dragons to the club of Tom Johnstone on a four-year deal!

“Following his Catalans teammate Mike McMeeken, the 28-year-old becomes the second current England international to pledge to Trinity in 2024. Johnstone participated in all three of the recent England test matches against Tonga, with two tries scored in the opening contest.

With Johnstone’s arrival, Wakefield Trinity is assembling a very strong squad for the upcoming campaign, and it looks like the hiring process is far from over.

Ste Mills, the head of recruitment, had made promises about additions that would “ignite” Super League and elevate the team to the top of the sport.

In light of this, Serious About Rugby League assembled a potential thirteen-man roster that Wakefield Trinity might use in 2025. It has been verified that McMeeken and Johnstone left the Stade Gilbert Brutus for Belle Vue since the development of the piece. Could any of the other players who were anticipated to play also do so?
