For Warrington Wolves this season, Leon Hayes has been a revelation, exploding onto the scene and securing a berth in the starting lineup. But the young player’s horrific ankle injury sustained during Warrington’s loss to Salford Red Devils has forced him to miss the remainder of the season.

Head coach Sam Burgess has pulled Josh Drinkwater in from the cold while Hayes is out injured, only a few days after he was connected to a move away from the team.

Warrington’s most recent appearance came during their victory over the Castleford Tigers at the beginning of March. Drinkwater sustained a thigh injury in the second half of that game and hobbled off. Due to his injury, Hayes was able to firmly establish himself in the side. George Williams, the captain of England, and he forged a strong partnership that has prevented Drinkwater from being included in the squad even after the Australian returned from injury.

But Drinkwater will have a chance to take Hayes’ spot thanks to his injury. Drinkwater has been added back to the Warrington 21-man roster for this weekend’s matchup with Hull FC. The team just acknowledged that they have received loan requests for Drinkwater. They declined these approaches because they preferred Drinkwater to offer protection. Drinkwater’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and he will leave the club.

Drinkwater was a constant in the Wire’s life last year. In a challenging season, he made 23 appearances for the Wolf Pack. Warrington’s dismal performance led to Daryl Powell’s mid-season dismissal as head coach.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Josh Drinkwater would depart Warrington at the end of the current campaign. Rod Studd, a broadcaster for Sky Sports, currently feels, though, that Drinkwater is going to have a run in the side.

In response to teams’ inquiries over Josh Drinkwater, Warrington CEO Karl Fitzpatrick stated earlier in the week that they wouldn’t rule out lending the Australian player out just in case. Apparently, something has happened just in case.
