Carlos Corberan claims that Mikey Johnston, a Celtic loanee, gives West Brom a “advantage” in their playoff quest because of his versatility as an inside playmaker and classic wide man.

After joining The Hawthorns on a temporary contract during the January transfer window, the Irish international has made a great impression, scoring three goals in his first seven Championship games.

Although Corberan has a broad range of alternatives in his lineup, the Baggies manager has acknowledged that he has great faith in Johnston since the striker gives the team a unique quality that only Grady Diangana can match.

He stated, “I believe a lot in Johnston because when we analysed him I watched a player that switches very well to the idea of wingers I like to have,” as reported by the Express & Star on March 4.

“I believe it’s critical to have two distinct winger profiles: wide wingers, such as Tom Fellows, Jed Wallace, or Matt Phillips, or wingers with the ability to play inside, such as playmakers.

“Depending on the opponent’s shape is the advantage, more as (inside) playmakers or more out wide. Grady (Diangana) and Johnston, for me, both have the profile.”

So far this season, Johnston has shown himself to be the ideal January loan addition for West Brom; his incredible goal-scoring performances at The Hawthorns have had the fans up from their seats.

West Brom haven’t been able to do loads of business since Corberan arrived in the Midlands, but should the Irish international continue his impressive start, he will have to go down as one of their shrewdest additions under the Spaniard.

The Celtic loanee may be key to the Baggies’ success in the closing weeks and months of the season as they attempt to qualify for the playoffs, especially considering the ailments that Corberan’s team is dealing with.
