According to accounts, a West Ham fan was hit by a road sweeper in Cologne, causing life-threatening injuries.

The 68-year-old was in the German city ahead of his team’s Europa Cup encounter on Thursday night.

He was reportedly driven over at a pedestrian traffic light near Cologne Cathedral at 9.20 p.m. on Wednesday.

He was to be transferred to the hospital with critical wounds, where he would spend the next day.

According to MailOnline, the victim had slipped under the sweeper’s brushes before the driver collided with the traffic light post, injuring himself.

The local police department said: “According to witnesses, the 68-year-old crossed Trankgasse at the pedestrian traffic light at 9:20pm, most likely on red.

He was hit by a cleaning vehicle coming from Comedy Street.

“Immediately following the crash, the 29-year-old driver unexpectedly veered his sweeper into a traffic light pole. He also had minor injuries.

“The police sent out a traffic accident investigation team to gather evidence and roped off a big portion of the accident site.
