The 29-year-old’s career took off in the 12 months following Shaun Maloney’s return to the team.

Having been away on loan in Scotland for the majority of his first two years with Latics, he emerged as a key member of the squad during the previous season on the left side.

Since the conclusion of the previous season, contract talks have been going on, with both Maloney and Jones expressing their wish for the player to stay with Latics.

The difference between what was offered and what his reps are anticipating to obtain on the open market, however, was too large for Latics, who operate on a smaller budget.

Jones announced on Twitter on Tuesday morning, “It’s with a heavy heart to announce that my time representing Wigan Athletic has come to an end.” “Contract talks have come to an end, and although I am sad to be departing, I understand the club’s circumstances and wish them well going forward.

“I want to express my gratitude to the entire staff for helping me rediscover my love for football, especially the first-team staff with whom I worked last season.

A special thank you to my teammates from the last three years, with whom I have formed lifelong friendships and memories.

“I’m wishing everyone the very best; the club has some amazing young players who will rise to the top.

“A huge thank you to all of the fans for their support over the past five years, to sum up what I’ve been thinking.

“As I’ve previously stated, I’m appreciative that you witnessed me enjoy my football last season following a challenging few years, and I have cherished the bond we have developed. Best wishes for the future and thanks again, JJ.”

Jones’ former teammates responded to the news quickly on social media.

Callum McManaman tweeted, “All the best, mate.”

In a post, Josh Stones said, “All the best, brother.”

“Best wishes, Jord, my brother! I’m going to miss you, Jason Kerr tweeted.

“It’s unfortunate that this couldn’t continue as he was back to his best last season,” Max Power continued. Both in the locker room and on the pitch, you will be missed. I hope your next endeavours go well, my friend.

Jones joined the Latics in the summer of 2021 after playing for Rangers, and he scored three goals in 50 games.
