Walters is not expected to play this week despite being named in the Wigan Warriors’ 21-man roster for their match against the Catalans Dragons.
Although Sam Walters is scheduled to make his comeback this week, Matt Peet does not anticipate seeing him play for the starting Wigan Warriors squad. The forward, who recovered from a broken collarbone sustained during the preseason, has been named in the team’s 21-man roster for the first time.
Following his injury in the 40-0 trial match against Hull FC, the 23-year-old has been absent; however, he has since recovered and is available for selection for the first time since joining Leeds Rhinos in the off-season.
Although he was included in Peet’s expanded team for the Warriors’ match against the Catalans Dragons on Thursday, the manager of the team stated that he was not expected to play at this time. Walters will instead play this Saturday at Robin Park for the reserves against Hull KR.
“He is ready to play, but if everything goes to plan, he will play in the reserves,” Peet said. “Although he would be the next to come in, he is in the 21 as cover for our edge forwards. The current plan is for him to get significant playing time in our reserves and put himself in position for next week’s match against the Huddersfield Giants rather than to start on Thursday.
“There’s no doubt about Sam’s versatility; the fact that he can play middle and edge forward would be very handy to have in our 17, but getting him good minutes on Saturday is the priority.”
After a stellar 2023 campaign with Leeds Rhinos, Walters’ wait for a competitive debut has increased anticipation. Peet is still enthusiastic about the qualities he can bring to the Super League champions despite his absence.
“We can’t wait to have him play for both our first team and reserves. He’s a great guy who has a unique skill set, fits in really well, and will be a good long-term fit for us. Although he’s had a stuttering start, it makes us and him even more committed to making it work.
