The Wolves midfielder has been linked with Arsenal but Gary O’Neil says he is confident of keeping the player at Molineux.
As whispers start to circulate towards the end of the season, Premier League leaders Arsenal are already being connected to a number of players ahead of the summer transfer window. Joao Gomes, a midfielder for Wolves who has also been connected to Manchester United recently, is one of those names.
Reporter Fabrizio Romano claims that there is currently “nothing concrete” despite the rumours that Gomes is interested in joining Arsenal. A ‘lot’ of prominent teams are still keeping an eye on him in the midst of constant media speculation over his future.
Nothing Concrete Between Arsenal and Gomes
The rumours continue to swirl, with Man United among the many other clubs linked
Romano wrote the following in his Daily Briefing column: “Joao Gomes, a midfielder for Wolves, is another player who has been linked to Arsenal by various sites. Stories like these are common, of course, and we have just heard speculations that Manchester United is interested in signing the Brazil international.
“It’s still my impression that Gomes isn’t doing anything substantial right now. Almost all of the teams are mentioned in the media once a week. As I’ve previously indicated, he is being scouted by several elite clubs, but nothing has advanced to a formal stage yet.”
A cynical interpretation of this would be that the media is being fed this interest by someone close to Gomes. It can also create interest in the player and place him on teams’ radars in a way he might not have been previously, increasing his value and resulting in a higher contract offer from Wolves.
O’Neil Confident About Keeping Him
When it comes to Gomes’ status as a Wolves player for the 2024–25 season, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is’very confident’. According to his boss, the midfield player is a vital component of O’Neil’s future ambitions and he loves the team.
“He loves it here, I speak to him all the time and he’s unbelievably happy,” O’Neil stated this week, as reported by the Express & Star. “I have no doubt that Joao Gomes will return in the upcoming year. He is a major contributor to our goals and adores being here.
“I don’t really fear losing Joao,” I said. I’m excited to collaborate with him again next season and feel quite at ease in this position.
Naturally, O’Neil will stand up for his player and declare his assurance in the circumstances. This keeps the dressing room a little more steady between now and the end of the season and lets rival clubs know that Gomes, who stunned BBC commentator Micah Richards when he played England for Brazil last month, is not for sale.
