Having had to make multiple budget signings in the wake of big sales and being compelled to make cost reductions in order to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability regulations, Wolves had an outstanding 2023–24 season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to sign on-loan midfielder Tommy Doyle on a permanent basis ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window, according to the Express & Star’s Liam Keen.
Although Doyle was initially signed by Wanderers on a season-long loan, the team still had the option to purchase the young player outright after that contract expired. Doyle intends to continue pushing forward the following term after gradually establishing himself as a key member of Gary O’Neil’s team.
Wolves to sign Doyle permanently
After signing Tommy Doyle on a season-long loan from Premier League winners Manchester City, Wolves are expected to sign him permanently, as reported by Liam Keen of the Express & Star. In the transaction, Wanderers included a £4.3 million buyout option, while City retained a 50% sell-on clause in case he eventually left Molineux.
Doyle was first limited to second-half substitute appearances and failed to establish himself ahead of Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina in the lineup. However, a strong second half performance during a 2-1 comeback victory at AFC Bournemouth in October 2023 offered a preview of what the 22-year-old could offer.
Tragically, Mario Lemina’s return to France after his father’s passing gave the midfielder a chance to play in late December and early January. After being down to ten men early in the game, Doyle made an impressive comeback in the centre of the park to give Wolves a 1-1 FA Cup Third Round tie at Brentford.
Doyle came through Man City’s youth and played on loan at Sheffield United and Hamburg before making his debut in the senior squad. Liam Keen said on X that Wolves plan to exercise their option to purchase the England U21 international outright.
O’Neil ‘delighted’ with Doyle’s showings
If Doyle were to sign a long-term contract with Wolves, transfer insider Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT in November 2023 that Doyle might end up being a “bargain.” Even though Man City has a sizable sell-on clause, Wanderers will think that paying slightly more than £4 million for the midfield player is a decent deal.
In addition, head coach Gary O’Neil, who expressed his happiness with Doyle’s adjustment to life in the Black Country, acknowledged that he anticipates Doyle being at Molineux next season. Doyle wants to improve on his debut campaign in the West Midlands and become a mainstay in the 40-year-old’s midfield by the upcoming season. Regarding the celebrity from Manchester, O’Neil stated (as reported by Express & Star):
