Salford City and Wrexham were drawn into the same group for the EFL Trophy, and the owners of both teams will be playing together again the following season.
Owned by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham will soon rematch with Salford City from the Class of ’92 as they prepare for an encounter in the EFL Trophy the following season. Wrexham was promoted from League Two the previous season.
Under head coach Phil Parkinson’s direction, the Red Dragons are expected to contend in the third division in the upcoming season following another productive campaign. With the signing of former Premier League players James McClean and Steven Fletcher, as well as the backing of their famous owners, the team was able to secure the second-place spot.
However, following a difficult season in which they only missed relegation back to non-league football, Salford finished in 20th position in the standings. Better outcomes in the 2024–25 season are what the ownership group, which includes former Manchester United players Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, and David Beckham, will be aiming for.
With a draw into North Group B against Wrexham in the EFL Trophy, the Greater Manchester team will have an opportunity to make a difference. Additionally, both teams have been placed with Port Vale, with the final draw still to come that will decide which Premier League Under-21 team will join the group.
Salford City has already seen success in this competition, having won the 2019–20 campaign, therefore they are familiar with the trophy. On the other hand, according to the Mirror, Wrexham Football Club last won in 2005.
The outcomes of the two teams’ most recent meetings have been inconsistent; Salford defeated Wrexham 3-1 in February, while the Welsh team triumphed 3-2 earlier in the campaign.
The owners of the two teams are known to admire one another; Wrexham’s co-chairmen, Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have openly voiced their appreciation for Beckham. Even though Wrexham lost to Bromley at Wembley in the FA Trophy final in 2022, the former England captain did make an appearance.
