It may have got a little lost in the promotion party since last Saturday but the season isn’t actually over just yet.

Wrexham’s work was completed with a 6-0 victory against Forest Green Rovers last week, and there isn’t much else to play for right now.

Wrexham cannot win the League Two title now that Stockport County have been proclaimed champions, and battling Mansfield Town for second place may not be a top priority with promotion already secured.

Still, Phil Parkinson takes his side to Crewe Alexandra this Saturday, backed by travelling Wrexham fans hoping for one more memorable away day before returning to League One.

Perhaps Parkinson will consider experimenting with his lineup on Saturday afternoon, but he will still be without a couple of injured players.

Jacob Mendy was injured at Grimsby but returned a few weeks later, starting the away game against Colchester United.
Mendy, on the other hand, only lasted slightly more than 30 minutes before being replaced due to another injury.

We haven’t seen Mendy since, and Parkinson has confirmed to The Leader that the Gambia international will undergo surgery.

Parkinson believes that this is the wisest approach, with Mendy now undergoing surgery in the hopes of being fit for pre-season training.

“Jacob will have an operation,” Parkinson said. “If there is one advantage to suffering an injury like that, it is that we have already received promotion. He may have his treatment now till the summer and perhaps emerge back strong. Obviously no-one likes being injured but Kevin Mulholland and his team are working hard to resolve that problem.”

This means that James McClean is likely to continue at left wing back unless Callum McFadzean is given a chance to shine.

Midfielder James Jones is also out of action, having not played since February’s 1-0 win over Notts County.

The Scot suffered a hamstring injury and has not played since, which will have upset Parkinson.

Jones has four goals in 23 League One appearances this season, and his absence has cost Parkinson the ability to rotate his engine room.

Parkinson has now hinted that Jones could return for the final game of the season against Stockport, but Wrexham will not take chances with him because there is nothing on the line in the next few games.

“James is coming close, but we can now take our time with him. He may get a chance in the final game of the season; we’ll evaluate him and see how he performs this week. But we don’t need to put him at risk right now,” he added.

Seeing Jones return to action before the season finishes would be a welcome boost heading into the summer, although the Scot might face new competition.

Wrexham will undoubtedly try to acquire midfielders this summer, and Jones may need to demonstrate that he can make a difference in League One following months on the sidelines.
