The North Yorkshire force is the subject of an investigation by the police watchdog after the death of a lady in Malton last week.

On April 24, Lisa Welford, 49, passed away following her extraction from the River Derwent.

One day later, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) received a referral from North Yorkshire Police.

“After a referral from North Yorkshire Police, we have begun an investigation into the prior contact the force had with a woman who was found in the River Derwent on 24 April and tragically pronounced dead in the early hours of the following day,” an IOPC spokeswoman stated on Thursday.

“On Tuesday, April 30, we launched an independent investigation. We will be examining the events leading up to her demise.

We are just getting started with our research. Our sympathies are with the woman’s friends and family, as well as everyone who was touched by her untimely passing.

“We have referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the death of a woman in Malton last week,” a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police stated.

The day following the event where Lisa Welford, 49, was pulled from the River Derwent, on Thursday, April 25, we made the required referral in accordance with regular procedure.

“After being brought to the hospital, she was tragically declared dead.”

The 47-year-old Vincent Joseph Morgan of Chandlers Wharf, Castlegate, Malton, has been charged with Lisa’s murder and has appeared in court.

After that, on April 30, he made an appearance at Leeds Crown Court, where he was placed under detention until his next court date of May 21.

October 21 is the date of the preliminary trial.
